♦  TEMPERATURES: Maximum temperatures were below normal by 4­5°C over parts of south peninsular India, 2­3 °C over parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat region. They were above normal by 2­4°C over parts of western Himalayan region, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya   Pradesh,   north   Chattisgarh,   Bihar,   interior   Maharashtra   and   northeastern states.   The   highest   maximum   temperature   of  35.5°C  was   recorded   at   Bhira (Maharashtra) in the coastal areas of the country.
♦   RAINFALL  :  Rainfall occurred at many places over  Kerala and Lakshadweep;  at a few places over south & coastal Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh and at one or two places over Tamilnadu and Madhya Pradesh. The chief amounts of rainfall (in cm) recorded at 1730 hours IST of yesterday were: Kavali­5, Minicoy­2, Cochin, Nellore, Visakapatnam, Coinmbatore and Sagar­1 each.

 CLOUDS: Kalpana­1 Cloud imagery at 0530 hours IST shows convective clouds over parts of southeast Arabian sea and Uttar Pradesh.  Low/medium clouds are seen over parts of western Himalayan region, remaining parts of northwest India, central India and rest peninsular India and northeastern states.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a westerly direction and may cross Tamil NADU coast of India between Nagattinam and Chennai by early morning of 30 Decenber 2011.

SUMMARY OF OBSERVATIONS : During the past (24) hours, rain have been widespread in  Lower Sagaing Region, Shan and Chin  States, fairly widespread in Mandalay Region, Scattered in Magway Region and Rakhine State, isolated in Upper Sagaing and  Bago Regions, Kachin and Kayah States and  weather has been partly cloudy in the remaining Regions and States. Night temperatures were (3°C) to (4°C) above December average temperatures in Lower Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Yangon and Ayeyawady Regions, Shan, Rakhine and Mon States and (5°C) to (6°C) above December average temperatures in Kachin, Chin and Kayah states and about December average temperatures the remaining Regions and States. The significant night temperatures were Pinlaung (4°C) and Putao  (8°C). The noteworthy amounts of rainfall recorded were Kyauktaw  (1.85)inches, Mindat (1.42)inches, Muauk U (1.18 ) inches, Saw (0.98) inch and Hakha (0.62) inch.

Weather Report Sri Lanka 30 December 2011 Climate Forecast



The cyclonic storm ‘THANE’ over the Bay of Bengal was centered about 350km Northeast of Jaffna at morning today (30th). This system is moving to the westward direction from its center (towards Indian east coast).

Shallow and deep sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Jaffna will be very rough with very strong winds and intermittent rain. Fishing and naval community is further advised to refrain from maritime activities in these seas.  

There is a threat of mild storm surge along the Northern and North-western coasts of Sri Lanka.
Intermittent showers accompanied by strong winds may prevail at times in the Jaffna Peninsula and occasional showers with fairly strong winds and at times in the rest of the Northern province, North-western, Eastern and North-central provinces.

Cyclonic THANE over the Bay of Bengal-Sri Lanka Weather 28 December 2011



The cyclonic storm ‘THANE’ over the Bay of Bengal remained stationary and was centered about 800km Northeast of Trincomalee and 850km Northeast of Jaffna  at 08.00 am today (27th). This system is likely to intensify further and move North-westward from its center (towards Indian east coast).
 As the Northeastern deep sea areas will be very rough with very strong winds and intermittent rain, fishing and naval community is further advised to refrain from maritime activities in these seas.  
 
A few showers accompanied by fairly strong winds may prevail at times in the Eastern, Northern and North-central provinces.
  As the situation is being continuously monitored, the public is further advised to the weather information released by the Department of Meteorology.

♦ Fog: Fog/dense fog has been  observed over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and some parts of north & east Rajasthan and Bihar. The stations where visibility reduced to 50 m or less are: Amritsar, Karnal, Delhi and Hamirpur.
♦  TEMPERATURES: cold wave conditions are prevailing over some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, north Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. The cyclonic storm in the South-West Bay of Bengal was centered about 750km East of Jaffna at 08.00 am today and it is likely to move North-westward from its center. Rain, very strong winds and very rough seas will continue to prevail in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Jaffna and Trincomalee.
Therefore, these seas are still not safe for naval and fishing activities. Especially the deep sea areas of these coasts will also experience intermittent rain and further advise to refrain from maritime activities. Under the influence of the depression, intermittent rain, very strong winds and very rough conditions are expected in the sea areas, especially deep seas, extending from Jaffna to Potuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Therefore, the above sea areas is still not safe for the fishing and naval activities. 
Fairly strong winds with light showers are expected in the Eastern, Northern, North-central, and Uva provinces and along the Eastern slopes of the Central hills. There will be scattered showers in the Southern, Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces too.
