The highest maximum temperatures of 36.5°C was recorded at Bhuj (Gujarat) in plains of the country.
♦ RAINFALL: Rainfall occurred at a few places over Tamilnadu and at one or two places over Lakshadweep, Kerala and southcoastal Andhra Pradesh. Weather remained mainly dry over rest parts of the country. The chief amounts of rainfall (1 cm or more) recorded at 1730 hours IST of yesterday were: Attiramapattinam10,
Puducherry6, Chennai and Vedaranniyam4 each and Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Karaikal3 each.
♦ CLOUDS: Kalpana1: Cloud imagery at 0530 hours IST shows convective clouds over parts of Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, south Andhra Pradesh, southeast & westcentral Bay of Bengal, comorin area and southeast Arabian sea. Low/medium clouds are seen over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and rest south peninsular India.
♦ The cyclonic storm 'NILAM', moved northwestwards and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 31st October 2012 near latitude 10.5°N and longitude 81.5°E about 320 km southsoutheast of Chennai. The system would move northnorthwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Cuddalore and Nellore, near Chennai by 31st October, 2012 evening.
♦ The trough of low from Lakshadweep and adjoining southeast Arabian sea to Karnataka coast persists. Under its influence, a low pressure area may develop over southeast Arabian Sea during next 24 hours.

 

Cyclone warning for Chennai

The Indian Meteorological Department said cyclonic storm Nilam was about 450 kilometres south-southeast of Chennai at 1430 local time (0900 GMT). The IMD said the system was expected to move north-northwest and cross the coast near Chennai by the evening of Oct. 31. 
The port official said so far two of the 10 vessels waiting for loading or discharge of cargoes have been moved outside to ensure the port's safety and the others would be moved gradually. 
Cargo operations were suspended from about 1330 local time (0800 GMT) and the suspension could continue to Wednesday afternoon or evening, he added. 
Krishnapatnam port, which handles around 15 million tonnes of cargo a year including coal, fertilisers and agricultural products, also halted cargo operations, a port official said. 
Chennai Petroleum Corp Limited's two refineries in the city, which have combined capacity of about 230,000 barrels per day (bpd), were operating normally, its managing director A. S. Basu, told Reuters 
The north Indian Ocean usually sees about five cyclones a year, about 5-6 percent of all cyclones, with October-November and May-June seeing the most severe ones. 
Chennai handled just over 27 million tonnes of traffic in April-September, according to the Shipping ministry.

The system would intensify further into a cyclonic storm and move northwestwards for some more time and then cross north Tamilnadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nagapattinam and Nellore by 31st October, 2012 afternoon/evening.
♦ The trough of low from Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast Arabian sea to Karnataka coast persists.
♦ A low pressure area would develop over southeast Arabian Sea during next 24 hours.

and cross Somalia coast near lat 09.0°N around early morning of 26th October. The system would not cause any adverse weather over west coast of India.

♦ The depression over northeast Bay of Bengal moved northeastward and crossed Bangladesh coast near Hatia between 0530 0630 hours IST of today, the 11th October, 2012 and lay centered at 0830 hours IST over Bangladesh and adjoining Tripura around 100 Km south of Agartala. The system is likely to move northeastwards and weaken gradually into a well marked low pressure area during next 24 hours.
♦ The trough in lower levels now runs from south Odisha to south interior Karnataka.

It, strengthening, will make landfall over central Vietnam on 6 October, then move pass the lower Northeast and the Central of Thailand.
